Types of Dragons in Chinese Mythology
In Chinese mythology, dragons (long 龍) are mythical creatures that come in various forms, each with its unique characteristics. Among the many types of dragons, the following are some of the most prominent:
- Shenlong 神龍 (Divine Dragon): Associated with the heavens and often depicted as possessing supernatural powers.
- Huanglong 黃龍 (Yellow Dragon): Represents the earth and is believed to control the elements.
- Dilong 地龍 (Earth Dragon): Symbolizes the land and is often associated with subterranean realms.
Medicinal Uses of Dilong
Dilong, or earth dragon, is not only a mythological creature but also has medicinal significance in Chinese traditional medicine. The ground extract of Pheretima xian dilong, known as Chinese earth-dragon-worm powder, is used topically to treat various ailments such as burns, chronic ulcers, and mumps.
Celestial Dragons in Chinese Cosmogony
Ancient Chinese cosmogonists believed in four types of dragons, one of which was the celestial dragon (Tianlong 天龍). Tianlong was responsible for guarding the heavenly dwellings of the gods, symbolizing the connection between the celestial and terrestrial realms.
